The origin of specific phobia from spiders: Neurophysiological mechanisms vs. testing the assumptions of evolutionary theories explaining the origin of specific phobia from spiders

Spider phobia is one of the most frequent specific animal phobias in the population. There are two key emotions in the origin of spider phobia: fear and disgust. Several theories of spider phobia origin were proposed and so the results and interpretations of these studies, which test prerequisites of these particular theories often vary. Studies focusing on psychophysiological measurements such as changes in heart activity or skin resistance, show differences in emotion intensity in phobics compared to non-phobics. The second group of studies concerning the analysis of proximate mechanisms attempts to uncover the brain activity during phobic stimulation. These studies mostly agree on the coordination of the cognitive control network and the fear-network with the key role of the amygdala and insula in the phobic reaction. Other studies which test prerequisites of evolutionary theories examine e.g. heritability of specific phobias, speed of spider detection or easier learning and extinction of fear of spiders. Functional Movement Disorders (FMD), also known as conversion, psychogenic, or dissociative motor disorders, are complex and clinically heterogeneous group of diseases. In addition to motor symptoms, FMD are manifested by a number of comorbid non-motor symptoms. Despite the potential reversibility, these disorders still have an unfavourable prognosis and are associated with a low quality of life. Regardless of the growing interest of both clinical and research communities over the last two decades, this issue remains insufficiently understood in many aspects. The aim of the presented studies was to fill some gaps in the knowledge of neurophysiological and clinical correlates in FMD. The first of the presented studies explored the robust neurophysiological phenomenon of prepulse inhibition (PPI) in FMD. The alteration in PPI, along with previous findings of a reduced PPI in other functional syndromes, supported a possible unified pathophysiology across functional neurological and somatic syndromes with implications for diagnostic classification and development of novel biomarkers and treatments. Neurophysiology of the urinary system after spinal cord injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) is a devastating condition that is a result of trauma generated by traffic accident, violence or falling. However, SCI may not only be caused by trauma, but also by other diseases such as - virus infection, tumors etc.. Any SCI affects the ability of the spinal cord to transmit and receive information and their further processesing. The spinal cord injury itself is followed by other complications that seriously impair the quality of life of the patients. One of the main problems is the dysfunction of the urinary system, which then does not work properly, thereby make patient's life dificult on the health and social side.
